Description
Discover the depth and character of naturally brown Romney wool, grown by the sheep rather than produced using artificial dyes.
This British Romney fleece combines rich natural colour with the breed’s long, crimped staple. It can be spun into distinctive brown yarn, blended with lighter or darker fibres, or used as a base for deeper hand-dyed shades.
The fleece is supplied completely raw. It has not been washed, scoured, carded, combed, dyed or bleached and will require preparation before use.

Before spinning or felting, sort the fleece and then scour and card or comb it according to your preferred preparation method.
Raw wool naturally contains lanolin and may include dust, vegetable matter, stained tips, occasional second cuts and other traces of farm life. The amount of natural matter will vary between packs.
The listed weight is the raw weight. The clean, usable fibre will weigh less after lanolin, moisture, dirt and unsuitable sections have been removed.
Naturally brown fleece is not a completely uniform colour. Shades may range from warm oat and tawny tones through to deeper brown, with variation between sheep, production batches and different areas of the fleece. This natural variation can add beautiful depth to handspun yarn.

What shade of brown will I receive?
Natural fleece varies. Your pack may include warm oat, tawny, mid-brown or deeper brown tones, and individual fibres may create a blended or subtly variegated appearance.
Will every pack be exactly the same colour?
No. Shade and colour distribution vary between sheep, batches and different sections of fleece. If you require wool for one larger project, order the full quantity together.
Is the fleece washed and ready to spin?
No. This is completely raw, unwashed fleece. It must be sorted, scoured and carded or combed before conventional spinning.
Has this fleece been hand-skirted?
The current product description does not specify this. If it has been skirted, add: “Yes. It has been hand-skirted to remove some heavily soiled and unsuitable sections, although further sorting will still be required.” If it has not, clearly describe it as unskirted.
Is this one complete fleece?
No. The fleece is sold in 250g, 500g and 1kg quantities rather than as one individually identified whole fleece.
Is it suitable for beginner spinners?
Romney’s long staple can make it accessible for learning fibre preparation and spinning. However, beginners must still be comfortable sorting, washing and preparing raw fleece.
Can it be spun in the grease?
Some experienced spinners choose to spin carefully selected fleece with some lanolin remaining. This is a personal technique and still requires suitable sorting and handling.
Can I dye naturally brown wool?
Yes. Brown fleece can produce rich, deep or muted colours when overdyed. The result will differ from dye applied to white fibre, so test a small prepared sample first
Is it suitable for felting?
Yes, once properly washed and prepared. It can be used for wet felting, needle felting and other fibre crafts.
Will the prepared wool weigh the same as the raw fleece?
No. The purchased weight includes lanolin, moisture, dust and other raw-fleece matter. Fibre may also be removed during sorting, so the clean usable weight will be lower.
What natural material might remain in the fleece?
Raw fleece may contain grass, seeds, straw, dust, stained tips, occasional second cuts and other traces of farm life.

Can I use this fleece for stuffing?
Not in its raw state. Choose the washed-and-carded British Romney Wool Stuffing for cushions, pillows and suitable craft projects.
Can I use it as building insulation?
No. This fleece has not been treated or certified for building insulation, including treatment against moths, pests or fire. Use a purpose-made and appropriately certified sheep’s-wool insulation product for construction or renovation.
How should I store raw coloured fleece?
Keep it cool, dry and protected from moths and other fibre pests. Do not seal damp fleece in plastic, as trapped moisture may cause deterioration.
