Description

Enjoy the natural character and versatility of pure British Romney wool without the preparation required for raw fleece.

Our Romney fleece has been professionally scoured using organically certified ENCO 4061 detergent and carded into easy-to-handle slivers, ready for your next creative project. The fibres are supplied undyed and unbleached, making them ideal for use in their natural shade or as a base for hand dyeing.

Romney wool is valued by crafters for its distinctive long fibres, natural crimp and versatility. It can be spun into characterful yarn, shaped through wet or needle felting, incorporated into textile projects or used as a natural filling material.

Suitable for:

  • Hand spinning
  • Needle felting
  • Wet felting
  • Hand dyeing
  • Textile and fibre art
  • Cushion and craft filling
  • Doll making and other decorative projects
  • The fleece is scoured using organically certified ENCO 4061 detergent before being carded and prepared into slivers.

Available pack sizes:

  • 250g – approximately 18cm × 22cm when packed
  • 500g – approximately 25cm × 25cm when packed
  • 1kg – approximately 40cm × 40cm when packed

These package dimensions are approximate. The wool may be compressed into a smaller parcel for delivery but will regain volume when gently opened and teased apart.

Because this is a minimally processed natural fibre, gentle variations in shade, texture and character should be expected. Occasional small pieces of vegetable matter may also remain despite careful processing.

This is prepared, unspun wool fibre rather than finished knitting yarn.

Is this raw fleece?

No. Unlike raw fleece, this wool has already been washed and carded. Customers wanting wool directly from the shearing process should choose the British Romney Raw Fleece listing instead.

Is it suitable for beginner spinners?

Yes. The prepared slivers remove much of the work involved in washing and carding raw fleece, making the fibre accessible to new as well as experienced spinners.

Can I use it for needle felting and wet felting?

Yes. The prepared Romney wool can be used for both needle-felting and wet-felting projects.

Is this knitting wool?

No. This is unspun wool fibre. It must be spun into yarn before it can be used for conventional knitting or crochet.

Will the wool arrive compressed?

It may be compressed into a smaller package to make delivery more efficient. Gently open and tease the fibres apart, and the wool will regain its natural volume.

Does processed wool contain any vegetable matter?

The fleece is washed and carded, but occasional small pieces of grass or other vegetable matter may remain. This is normal for a naturally grown and minimally processed fibre.

Can I use this wool as building insulation?

No. This wool is supplied for spinning, felting, craft projects and filling only. It has not been treated or certified for use as building insulation, including treatment against moths, pests or fire. Please use a purpose-made and appropriately certified sheep’s wool insulation product for construction or renovation projects.
