RMW kindly sent me some more British Merino which was much better quality than what I had received originally. The staple length is short and merino needs quite a few hot scours to get the majority of the lanolin out. This fleece did have dirty tips but most of this can come out in washing and further processing. I’m so glad I’ve been able to try British Merino which once processed is very soft. I am grateful for the customer service at RMW which is one of the reasons I will be a regular customer going forwards

Description
Our pure Merino fleece is super fine with a micron of circa 15-18 and is ideal for spinning into yarn or for felting. Our fleeces are not bleached or dyed so are perfect for hand dyeing. This raw fleece is straight from the sheep so will need washing and carding before it can be worked with.
The Merino sheep has the finest quality of fleece on any native British breed of sheep. The fleeces have a short staple suitable for experienced spinners and is super soft for use in the production of clothing.

I was really looking forward to trying British Merino, unfortunately I was sent a very dirty part fleece which I’m not sure is suitable for spinning. I’ve scoured it multiple times but the VM and dirt is pretty well embedded. I bought 500g @£15 which given the condition of the fleece I was sent I don’t feel is value for money. It’s a real shame as I’ve bought fleeces of other breeds from them in the past and they have been great
Purchased 500g merino fleece as an experiment as I have a) never spun 100% merino before, and b) not ordered raw fleece online before without seeing it. The fleece is very dense, and stickier than I am used to (I'm used to spinning merino x ) which I think could just be the nature of merino. Tips very dirty and almost as if glued together, again is this a feature of all merinos? A fair bit of vm and dust. Lots of double cuts. Staple length is shorter that I expected, probably 3 - 3.5 inches. Fleece did not come in "one piece" so to speak, it was lots of random bits, which were jammed into a bag (for delivery that makes sense of course but makes me wonder if it is sensible to buy fleece online rather than collect from the farm where it would be more 'open' and hopefully in one piece), some lovely bits and some really not. I probably had to discard 1/5 to 1/4 of what arrived. Having said all that I am enjoying experimenting with combing it or carding it, different ways of washing it, and the resulting yarn is lovely and soft. Would I buy fleece (any fleece) online again? It's a good question.
