With lambing well underway for our Romneys and Merinos, it is certainly a busy time on the farm! We’ve brought our Merinos up to the barns by the house which means we can keep a nice close eye on them whilst they are lambing. The Romneys, meanwhile, on the whole lamb outdoors and we moved them to their lambing fields a couple of weeks ago.
We are now quite a way through lambing time, with the majority now lambed, which now means continuing to regularly check those still to lamb, as well as all of our new arrivals. April 1st brought cold winds and snow with it, which made this an even more challenging job, but farm life goes on whatever the weather!
We have a few pet lambs who we are feeding, and a few Merinos who are being topped up alongside their mother’s milk, and have turned out some of our ewes & lambs in the field that houses the Shepherds Huts – a real treat for our guests, many of whom have also had the chance to feed the lambs too.
You may recall that last month we mentioned dagging our expectant ewes – removing any soiled wool from around the bottom and the wool around the udders. This has now been processed and we are awaiting a delivery of 500kg of wool pellets to top up our supplies ready for the busy season in the garden and on the veg patch!
We’ve also had restocks of our toiletries – thank you for your patience if you have been waiting to top up your supplies – and have a good amount of raw and topped fleece available too, which should take us through to shearing time later in the year.
