News from the farm - October/November 2021

16 November 2021

The seasons have changed and autumn has arrived on the Romney Marsh, with a spectacular display of colours in the hedgerows & trees across the farm.  With the weather staying kind to us, we've been able to crack on with plenty of arable jobs, including ploughing and drilling of crops for next year's harvest.  With the nights drawing in so quickly and with evenings being quite chilly now, we know that winter is not that far away.  But we will enjoy the autumn as long as it lasts with its hedgerows abundant with rosehips, sloes & blackberries, knowing that the birds are having a feast while they can too!

It's not just been the family enjoying the autumn colours on the farm, our guests at Romney Marsh Shepherds Huts have also had beautiful and everchanging views across the farm over the past few weeks, and we're looking forward to welcoming more guests as we head into winter.  We've had some very clear nights too, perfect for star gazing and with frosts beginning to form on the colder nights, the surrounding fields have transformed to our very own winter wonderland.  There's still some availability before the end of the year and we are taking bookings for 2022 now as well.

Meanwhile, back on the farm and with the sheep, the tups have now gone in with our Romney and Merino flocks, meaning lambing should start from April 2022 - always an exciting and busy time to look forward to!  We've also got a small flock grazing by the Shepherds Huts, and it's so easy just to sit and watch them as they graze away.  This year's lambs have been going off to the market in a steady stream, prices have been remarkably good this year, considering the high numbers around.

Some of the cows with younger calves decided they wanted to come home, waiting patiently at the closed gate which when opened they just walked down the road and into their winter yard, settling immediately.  The main herd are still out but they have got a shed they all reatreat to when the weather gets bad, so they can stay out until December being fed a bale of sileage a day.

In the showroom we're busy with some exciting new launches that we've been working really hard on and the countdown to Christmas is well underway with orders for gifts coming in thick & fast and being delivered to all corners of the country.  We've also been busy out at events, and are getting set for a couple of weekend openings here at the showroom next month.  Our topped fleeces are now back and in stock, alongside our full range which is available to order online for nationwide delivery (and gift wrapping as an optional extra) via our online shop.
