The Landrover Burleigh Horse Trials
HORSES AND SHOPPING GALORE AT THE LAND ROVER BURGHLEY HORSE TRIALS 2012
The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games might still be uppermost in people’s minds and the rain might have obliterated much of the sporting calendar but there is still plenty of equestrian sport to look forward to at The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials, Stamford, Lincolnshire (Aug 30 - Sept 2).
With the cancellation of both the Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials and The Festival of British Eventing, The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials offers eventing enthusiasts a final opportunity this year to watch some of the world’s finest horses and riders as they compete for the Land Rover Perpetual Challenge Trophy and a first prize of £55,000.
The competition starts with two days of dressage in the main arena on Thursday. Thursday is also the day the inter-branch Pony Club show jumping that takes place in Ring 2 and on Friday Ring 2 plays host to the popular Dubarry Burghley Young Event Horse Finals. Now as much a part of Burghley as the horse trials, these finals are the culmination of 20 national qualifying competitions, designed to talent spot the equine stars of the future. A parade of sport horse stallions will fill the lunch-time break in this arena while international dressage trainer Ferdi Eilberg will oversee a dressage display in the main arena.
Saturday is cross country day – 80 horse and rider combinations will test their mettle as they tackle the famous fences around the Burghley course and the competition comes to its climax with show jumping on Sunday to determine who will carry home the Land Rover Perpetual Challenge Trophy.
But Burghley is more than just horses, it is an event that is acknowledged as one of the greatest British social occasions and especially renowned for its shopping. Over 500 selected trade stands, seven specialist pavilions, including a new ‘Green Lifestyle’ pavilion and the Burghley Food Walk offer an unrivalled and this year much missed opportunity for a spending spree. The ‘Burghley App’ is being updated to include a shopping feature and a GPS ‘location aid’ that will help users find their way around the show ground.
“With the long-term forecast set fair for the autumn and the anticipated parade of the British Eventing Olympic team at The Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials on Sunday demand for tickets is high and we are expecting an exciting and great event,” said Event Director Elizabeth Inman.
