Shawn The Sheep!
Well summer is officially here! To a sheep farmer that means only one thing... shearing! Over the past two weeks we've been shearing a field or two of sheep at a time, trying to get through the smaller numbers on dry days! However some of our sheep are in flocks of 300+ which require additional help! So this morning we had a team of contract shearers come in and help us with one of these 300+ ewe flocks. All the ewes were shawn and the lambs separated within the space of about 3 hours, with the shearers able to finish a ewe in approximately 1 minute! With another few days of shearing over the next two weeks we'll soon finish the remaining 600 sheep and then it will be time to sort the fleeces and send them for grading at Kent Wool Growers in Ashford. After being graded we keep back the highest quality fleeces for use in our woollen range and the remainder (roughly 5 tonnes of raw fleece) will be sold by the British Wool Marketing Board on the open wool market. And that will be an end to shearing for another year!
